Spiral Espial

This piece is in Anchorage, Alaska at Turnagain Elementary School. Its subject matter is exploration. Exploration of the world, thus there are maps of Captain Cook's voyages. He was the first European man to enter into the Anchorage region. The base on the left in the photo below is symbolic of the manmade world and the other of the natural world. The base on the right shows constellations.

Below is a view of the piece in the night, there are uplights in the top of each base which light up the arch and there are lights within each base that reveal by night, the pieces that are inside them. Since they are behind perforated metal, they seem to disappear in the daytime. Also at night, the constellations on the bottom of the base are lit up.

Below is a view of the right base at night. There is an infinity symbol within the column which has cut outs on them which throw shadows onto the surface behind. These are of different symbols, such as E=MC2

The photo below shows the piece from the side.

There are four types of transportation shown, a plane, car, ship and train. Lea Anne Lake sculpted them in oil clay and then cast them from clear resin, you can see them in the archway below. There were cast bronze branches and sets of leaves cut from copper and patinaed green within the archway, these symbolize the natural world.

The arm below points to the heavens, it is bronze and cast from Life. It symbolizes the exploration of the Universe. Within the cast bronze globe there is a human shape made of brass with a enameled red heart within it symbolizing the exploration of the human heart. Also, you can see below human figures walking on the globe, which represents the activities we partake of here on this planet.

This panel below is from the nature base. It is entirely sculpted by Lea Anne Lake of Lake Art Company. The panels are cast bronze, the one on the right is animal prints, with numbers, there is a key held in the office at the school, telling which animal makes each print. The panel on the left is a nature scene sculpted and cast in bronze.

Here is a detail of the nature panel, sculpted by Lea Anne Lake. The panel is laid out like a landscape with different sections one for water, which is partly shown below with a fish, crab shells, sand etc, then there is a section showing water plants, iris, etc. It then moves to grasses and trees, then sky, clouds and birds.

Below is a photo of the sculpture in the site. the green of the school is echoed in the sculpture with the blue green copper patina.
